For further information:

The earliest confirmed Collins ancestor in my line is Stephen L. Collins (aka Laurence S. Collins). He was born the 4th of May 1816-1820 in Erie or Jefferson County, NY. His obituary stated that he moved to Ohio when about 18 years of age. From census records he lists his parents as being from Vermont.

Newspaper: Buffalo (NY) Patriot, 27 Oct 1837. Letters left at the P.O. of Newstead, Erie Co., NY. Stephen L. Collins.

In 1840 he married Mary Maria Helfer in Wayne Co., Ohio. At the same time he attended the Granville Literary and Theological Institute in Ohio, and is listed in the 1840-1 catalog as being from Knox County Ohio.

Stephen L. Collins was an itinerant Baptist Preacher. He ministered in OH, IL, IN, NE, and MO.

He and Maria Helfer Collins had 13 children, several not surviving to adulthood. Their known children are: Alpha (1844-1881), Tabitha Dorcas (1845-1850), Christopher Royce (1847-1919), Lydia Maria (1850-1933), Mary Ellen (1853-1938), Charles Martin (1857-1941), Ahira Mark (1859-1939), Daniel Didymus (1862-1904), John Timothy (1864-1926), Emily Malinda; (1867-1957).

Stephen L. Collins died 31 March 1902 at his home near Lockwood, Dade County, Missouri and was buried in the Collins Cemetery near his home.

Other researchers have that he is the son of Cornelius and Eva Collins of Schoharie Co, NY. Evidence is lacking however. This couple did have a Stephan Collins born about the same time but he lived his entire life in and near Schoharie Co NY. I can find no DNA matches with descendants of Cornelius and Eva Collins.

The autosomal DNA suggests that descendants of Stephen and Mary Helfer Collins are related to the Cummings family of Newstead, Erie Co., NY. I have so far been unable to unravel the connection, but multiple Stephen L. Collins descendants DNA match with multiple descendants of Elijah Cummings/Cummins/Commins and his wife Caroline Collins Cummings.
