Denis Collins and Margaret Mahony lived in Lissane Lower, outside Drimoleague in West Cork, Ireland.

Denis was probably the son of Michael Collins (1790-1870) and Mary Donovan of Lissane Lower. There is no surviving baptism record to help confirm or refute that assumption.

Besides Denis, Michael and Mary had daughters Margaret (1823-?); Catherine Collins Collins (1833-1918), and possibly Jane (1840). There may have been another daughter, Nora Collins Hourihane (1824?-1913) but a baptism record for a Nora or Honora cannot be tied to the family. There were also sons John (1825); Humphrey (1831); Jerry (1835); and Michael (1837).

Three sons of Denis and Margaret settled in Newport, Rhode Island, USA.
