R1b is by far the predominant Y haplogroup of Europe. The majority of Collins yDNA project members are somewhere in R1b. There has been some revision in the structure of R1b over 2019-2020.

The R1b breakdown chart is updated for 2020. Haplogroup A286 starts at the 12 o'clock position. The haplogroups in the chart key should be read left to right as the chart is read clockwise.

The relatively large portion of Unclassified R-M269 is due to the lack of SNP refinement on the part of several testers. Their matches are such that it isn't worthwhile hazarding an educated guess. Testers in this category don't have Collins matches. These testers should consider deep SNP testing if they want to learn any more about their nature of their SNP patriline.

The tree below is based on four sources: ISOGG, FTDNA, YFull, and Big Tree. Source information is in a constant state of flux, so the tree below may not necessarily reflect the latest findings or show consistency.

Under R1b > L51 come two key divisions. P310 contains most of the haplogroups we are familiar with. PF7589 is the second branch. Not a lot is known about PF7589 yet.

Under L51 > P310 are two familiar divisions. U106 is linked with ancient Germanic tribes. Sister branch P312 is linked with central and western Europe.

Under P312 are three more familiar divisions. DF27 is linked with the Iberian peninsula. U152 is linked with central Europe and with Halstatt / La Tene cultures. Z290 is the parent of L21, which is the forefather of many western Europe haplogroups.

Under L21 is DF13, which in particular spawns off several haplogroups known in the British Isles. Z39589 is forcing our attention, as it includes M222 downstream. Sometimes referred to as Irish Type 1, M222 is linked to the northern half of Ireland and Scotland. FGC11134 is a parent to CTS4466. Ancient remains of FGC11134 have been found in the northern half of Ireland; CTS4466, sometimes referred to as Irish Type II, is linked to the southern part of Ireland. ZZ10 gives rise to Z255, associated with Leinster, and Z253, a parent to the more familiar L226 (Dal Cais). FGC5494 is well distributed through the British Isles; so far these Collinses are probably of English origin.

The haplotree is a rough summary of findings, and does not show all the intermediate SNPs in the SNP streams. Refer to the individual analysis pages for more details.
